One in ten children in the UAE suffers from asthma, according to a study led by the Ministry of Health and Prevention. This is not surprising as asthma disease is increasing across the world by 50% every 10 years. But it is increasing faster in the UAE due to a combination of factors, such as extremely high levels of air pollution, dust, and humidity.
The results from the 3,436 children in the 2021 study showed asthma, wheezing, and hay fever were more common in younger children, while those aged 13-14 were more likely to suffer stuffy noses caused by allergies or skin rashes. Adults suffer the same symptoms along with dry eyes, brain fog and even depression. This is because the particles and gases in the polluted air get into the bloodstream, and then to the brain, lungs and heart.
Asthma is also more likely to develop in young children when the climate changes (which is what is happening now). Worsening outdoor and indoor air quality, dirty AC ducts and families spending much more time at home are also major factors.
